Thermal Conductivity of Sand–Silt Mixtures

Heat flow controls the design and operation of a wide range engineered geosystems. This study uses transient thermal probe measurements to determine evolution conductivity air-dry water-saturated sand–silt mixtures as function effective stress. Results confirm that soils varies with state stress, dry mass density, mineralogy, pore fluid properties highlight effect contact resistance on granular materials. Thermal follows linear relationship logarithm stress consequence fabric compaction, increased coordination number, deformation, reduced resistance. The bulk is more than seven times for same fines content (FC) Pore-filling contribute conduction paths interparticle coordination; peak in takes place at FC≈0.4; this mixture corresponds transition from fines-controlled coarse-controlled mechanical response (i.e., both coarse grains are load bearing), agreement revised soil classification system.
